Appropriately, winter’s chilly month of January happens to be National Hot Tea Month. There’s something relaxing about curling up on the sofa with your hands cupped around a warming mug of tea. The steam playfully swirls up to touch your face and each sip of hot liquid warms you inside and out, casting those winter chills aside. Yes, January seems like the opportune time to explore the world of teas and to partake in the daily sipping ritual. It is the goal of one shop in Port Jefferson to enable Long Islanders to do just that.
As Susanne, a career pre-school teacher and lifelong tea enthusiast, opted for a change of pace, her husband was on a quest of his own. In search of a storage freezer for stashing the household’s big box purchases, he stumbled across an advertisement on Craig’s List for a shop structure in Port Jefferson that was to include the sought after freezer unit. The couple set off to check out the venue, and Susanne needed no moments of pondering as to what would become of the space.
You, Me and Tea, located at Chandler Square in the historic seaport village, stocks over 80 varieties of loose-leaf teas that include organic and fair-trade options. The assortment includes black teas, white teas and green teas, as well as a variety of herbal and rooibos tisanes. Here, you will find numerous artisan blends to pique your palate’s curiosity. The most popular teas forever remain the traditional English variations, including Earl Grey and English Breakfast. For each tea available for purchase, a small jar of the tea is displayed so that shoppers can sample the aromas before deciding on their selection. From smoky to sweet, there is a tea for every drinker and a drinker for every tea.
The shop also sells an impressive array of teapots, collectible bone China, teacups, mugs and tea preparation accessories. The teapot styles range from ceramic to cast iron to the ancient Chinese Yixing clay teapot. The teapots are functional as well as decorative when displayed along a collector’s shelf. Cups and mugs are available to enhance any kitchen décor and to savor your uniquely preferred tea selection. Since the teas sold at You, Me and Tea are sold in loose-leaf form, be sure to pick up a package of tea infusion sachets or a mesh tea infusion ball. For a delightfully sweet touch, consider a package of honey stirrers.
The shop is entering its sixth year in business. As a bustling tourist village, Port Jefferson welcomes its share of foreign guests, many of whom are enthralled upon entering You, Me and Tea as they spot the quality loose teas that they have been unable to track down elsewhere. Susanne is delighted to answer your tea questions and clearly enjoys her role in acquainting customers with the range of flavors, aromas and benefits of the different teas.
For those who reside further west and enjoy wiling away the hours browsing through books, You, Me and Tea has opened a second location within Huntington’s Book Revue. A visit to this newest location will enable shoppers to stock up on teas and on reading material, the simple pleasures and necessities for a Long Island winter ahead.
